Capacitor voltages balancing method for buck modular DC/DC converter

The most critical problem of the modular DC-DC converter (MDCC) is voltage balancing submodule (SM) capacitors, MDCC with stepped 2-level modulation has been developed and presents a good solution, however, this type many restrictions when there wide range capacitance tolerance SM capacitors that results inaccurate capacitor voltages balancing. To solve problem, paper discusses proposed method Compared modulation, using modified duty cycle offers merits: i) reduction in output overshoot during dynamic operation improvement time response system and; ii) accurate over each capacitor; iii) sorting algorithm replaced for which reduces computation burden. ensures stable balancing, improves system, decreases current compared prior art MDCCs, where adopted. An analytical simulation presented MATLAB/Simulink to explain operation.
